What is Stand Up To Cancer?Stand Up To Cancer is a joint national fundraising campaign from Cancer Research UK and Channel 4, calling on the UK to stand together and rise up against cancer. The money raised funds translational research – research designed to take breakthroughs in the lab and transform them into new tests and treatments for the patients who need them right now, saving lives. Help us to bring about cancer’s downfall. Join the fight.

Where does the money go?
100% of the money we raise helps turbo charge savvy science into life-changing treatments!
For example, two of our top scientists in London are trialling an advanced form of radiotherapy that they believe will help people whose cancer has started to spread around the body. Called ‘stereotactic body radiotherapy’ (SBRT), it works by firing highly accurate bursts of radiotherapy from all directions at a tumour – and potentially targeting several tumours in rapid succession.
By beaming low doses from loads of different angles, the tumour becomes the centre of the radiation hotspot, leaving surrounding organs untouched. If this trial is successful, it could be a serious game changer for people whose cancer has begun to spread.
Earlier this year Aspire Lounges were contacted by one of our customers, Sally. Sally was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 53, later on that year Sally was also made redundant. When her first operation to treat the cancer was not as successful as hoped, Sally underwent further surgery, chemotherapy and hormone therapy, including taking the breast cancer drug Tamoxifen.
Cancer Research UK played an important role in the clinical trials for Tamoxifen and, later, supported research that showed taking a small dose of aspirin alongside Tamoxifen reduces the risk of blood clots associated with the cancer drug. Further research in the United States has suggested that taking low-dose aspirin with Tamoxifen can improve its effectiveness at treating breast cancer and its spread.
Now in 2018, Sally is doing well, has a new job, and she, along with her husband Dave, are going on their first summer holiday since the diagnosis, flying from Liverpool Airport, the home of our newest Aspire Airport Lounge. We like to make the start of each journey special for eveyone, but we decided to make Sally's visit to the new Aspire Lounge at Liverpool sparkle, and surprised her with a bottle of champagne (and a sneaky photographer) to ensure that her well deserved holiday was that extra bit special.
While Stand Up To Cancer wasn’t around when the research was undertaken that Sally has benefited from, her story highlights the importance of research – and the important work they do to fund game-changing treatments.
With your help we can take cancer out. It’s Payback Time.
